Conjugated linoleic acid is found naturally occurring in many foods, particularly in grass-fed meat such as beef or mutton, and has been shown in some studies to reduce fat and stimulate muscle growth. In particular, it is often taken as a supplement by men involved in bodybuilding, looking to improve their appearance prior to a competition, although it is also useful for anyone who might not have the time to exercise, or who is already overweight, as the increase in muscle will help boost the metablism, burning more fat.
Like other healthy natural weight loss supplements, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can be used in support of a healthy eating plan for gradual weight loss, and will help you to break out of the vicious up and down cycle of gaining and losing weight that following fad diets can get you trapped in. It’s better to stay overweight then to keep losing and gaining weight, and if you want to lose weight, following a gradual weight loss program supported by supplements like CLA is undoubtedly for the best.
Most experts (unless they are trying to sell you something) agree that the diet that works best in the long term is the non-diet, where instead of eating special foods and banning others, you eat slightly smaller quantities of a normal healthy diet. If you are currently living entirely on pizza, fries and chocolate, then okay, some changes may be overdue. But you can still have small portions of all of those foods from time to time. If this is the kind of diet that you want, then CLA can help reinforce your plan by boosting your fat loss. Dr Michael Pariza of University of Wisconsin-Madison, reported to the American Chemical Society that CLA “doesn’t make a big fat cell get little. What it rather does is keep a little fat cell from getting big.”
A number of studies have been done on CLA, with mixed results. Mostly the experiments revealed that CLA does cause fat loss, but at a slow rate that less sensitive tests may not be able to detect. For example, a study in the Journal of Nutrition shows that subjects taking CLA supplements lost on average 6 pounds more fat then people taking a placebo, and that the ideal dosage is around 3 grams.
Another study by a group at a university in Indiana provided evidence that diets with plenty of CLA could help to maintain normal levels of insulin in people suffering from diabetes. Of course, before trying any supplements yourself, take the time to check with your doctor about them and insure there will be no ill effects.
Naturally there isn’t a magic solution that will instantly make fat evaporate, but if you are willing to commit to the long haul, taking a CLA supplement might help you. Keep in mind that its main purpose is to make your body replace fat with muscle, which will make you slimmer and healthier, but not actually weight any less on the scales. Combine it with a good healthy diet plan, and you’ll soon reach your idea weight.

It shouldn’t be surprising that, with all the positive press they get, it can be easy to get caught up in the hype and start thinking that fad diets really work. The trouble is, although they do work for the first week or two, this is really only water weight loss and you soon gain it all back when your body rehydrates. Trying to achieve permanent fat loss from these kinds of diets is doomed to failure, and can even cause serious health complications.
Other fad diets are not so obviously crash diets with outrageous claims but they are over hyped diet plans that tend to be fashionable for a while and usually make a lot of money for the inventor in associated product sales. In the best cases these are good nutrition plans which will help you lose weight, but which you could probably have gotten for free from your doctor. In the worst cases they will prove so difficult to follow that you will give up after a week.
The bad of fad diets
1. Diets that claim to produce quick weight loss without any effort, are in most cases based around eating a very unbalanced diet. They may encourage taking supplements as well, but even if you do, you are still likely to develop nutritional deficiencies after a few weeks. In essence, you are starving your body by denying yourself what you need to live and be healthy, which is very dangerous.
2. Restricting the type of food like this often produces very boring meals, as you have little flexibility in what you cook. This can lead you to start craving the forbidden foods, even if only because you know you’re not supposed to eat them. Then when you break your diet, you feel guilty, and think it is your own fault for failing, when really you just need a better diet.
3. Most fad diets do not follow recommendations of the American Heart Association and similar bodies for fat levels in the diet. Often the diet will recommend high fat foods and low carbs which if taken long term, could result in heart disease. The promoters may tell you that the diet is only intended to be followed for a short time. But you probably will not reach your goal weight in that time, and then what? You either continue with a plan that is not good for your health, or stop and probably gain back what you lost.
4. Your body needs a much bigger variety of foods then you can find on most fad diets. We eat what we do for a reason, and cutting out whole food groups is not a solution to excessive weight.
5.Diets that make promises that seem to good to be true, are never true. There is no top-secret hidden method to make you lose weight fast, and if you keep following the latest miracle diet, you will only end up gaining and losing the same pounds over and over again, which is much less healthy then just staying at a constant weight would be, even if that constant is overweight.
In most cases you get what you pay for, but not when it comes to dieting. All of these high-profile fad diets are little more then scams, designed to take your money without caring if you actually manage to lose weight. If you are really serious about getting in shape, I’m afraid you have no choice but to start eating healthily and exercising regularly – fad dieting just won’t do!

The main thought on how to reduce weight is to have the mental concept of losing the weight. This is a very important factor because if you are wanting to lose the excess pounds, you will need to have a lot of motivation and drive to discipline yourself enough to stick with your goal. Keep in mind the changes you are going to make will be a way of life not just a fad diet or a cycle of yo yo weight loss and weight gain.
There is not one specific concept that will work for everyone. This is because everyone has different goals and visions. With this said, being realistic in the goals you want to accomplish is very important. If you set the bar too high then you will be discouraged and lose interest if you are not seeing results.
Start slow with the daily changes your are going to need to make and do not overwhelm yourself with too many changes at once. Focusing on one thing at a time will be much better. Once results are being seen, it will encourage you to want to do more to reach your goal. Reward yourself by setting small goals, but still keep your eye on the end accomplishment. The routine you set up for yourself can be changed at anytime to make it harder or easier.
Diet and exercise are the two main focuses. Nutrition is very important, as what you eat directly affects your body and your metabolism. Some people choose to write in a food journal to keep track of what they ate and if they over ate what triggered it. Drinking water is a great way to cut quite a few calories from your diet. Eating your meals at home and snacking smartly also helps the process go faster.
Adding exercise to your life style changes is a winning combination. When choosing an exercise routine choose to do cardio as well as strength training for lasting results. Some people choose the buddy system in order to have a work out partner to help them through the tough times, while others choose to go to a gym and hire a personal trainer to hold them accountable. Whatever you choose, it needs to be the right decision for you.
This life changing concept will not happen overnight. Anything that is good is worth waiting for and this is no exception. In the end you will be a new and improved person who has a much healthier way of life and you may even be able to help others, once you have accomplished this for yourself.
